As of July 2025, we have three standard wirehaired dachshunds in Kennel Daxgården.

We prioritize healthy family dogs from good hunting lines that meet the FCI standard. We prefer that they are short-time driven, and they must be gun steady and give tongue on track (spurlaut). They must show predator sharpness and be willing to enter fox dens.

At the same time, they must have a calm and good temperament, as they live in our home and are an active part of our daily life. They must also be able to come with us on trips, and therefore be calm in the car and when we visit others.

Many of the hunting elements have been tested in various trials in Germany – see more below under each individual dog.

When we say our dogs are healthy, we mean that they thrive, get the right diet, weigh appropriately for their size, and have the opportunity to exercise their natural instincts.

All our dogs, for example, love digging in the soil, and we have dedicated part of our land as a playground for the dogs, so they can train this instinct as much as they want.

Since the back is the dachshund’s ‘weak spot’, we focus strongly on back health. All our dogs are therefore X-rayed for back health. We prioritize coats that don’t require much stripping.

The dogs we use for breeding are registered in the Danish Kennel Club (DKK), and we follow DKK’s breeding regulations. We have completed DKK’s breeder education and hold a kennel name under DKK.

Zeus

Zeus

  • Born: April 23, 2021
  • Back X-ray: K0
  • CRD-PRA: Clear via ancestry
  • OI: Clear via ancestry
  • Eye exam: No remarks
  • Weight: Approx. 9.7 kg

Zeus is of “Danish production” with ancestry from well-known Danish kennels such as Gravmand, Markvangen, and Landevejen. Further back, there are also dogs from Scandinavia and Germany.

Zeus has been on the stud list since autumn 2023, and is now the father of 3 fine litters.

Trials

Zeus received an ’excellent’ rating at a DKK show in Silkeborg, and a 2nd prize at a driven hunt trial. He has passed gun steadiness and spurlaut trials in Germany (DTK Delbrücker Land), where he also passed a fox trial (cage) and received wild boar training.

Characteristics

At home, Zeus is a calm and happy dog, and a playful and loving ‘big brother’ to Leda and Hera. He keeps an eye on ‘his pack’ and barks when guests arrive in the yard. He enjoys being outdoors and often ‘keeps watch over the field’ from the terrace. He can be a little skeptical of new things, and absolutely dislikes vegetables in his food. He is healthy, stripping-free, and overall without “trouble.”

Zeus usually participates in larger driven hunts. He is a good game finder (red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, hare, and fox) and typically drives 20–40 minutes with a loud and easy-to-hear bark. He usually drives quite independently. Driven hunting is his passion and his main purpose.

Zeus is trained for fox den hunting. Both here in Denmark with mechanical foxes and abroad with live foxes in training dens. He goes to fox without hesitation, but without being excessively sharp. Zeus has been used a few times for practical den hunts in Denmark.

Leda

Leda

  • Born: October 21, 2022
  • Back X-ray: K8 – not used for breeding
  • CRD-PRA: Clear via ancestry
  • OI: Clear via ancestry
  • Weight: Approx. 8 kg
  • CDDY: CDDY/CDDY
  • Pedigree name: Højsletgaards Asfrid

Leda is a relatively light-built dachshund. Fast and with very fine ground clearance, as the standard prescribes. Leda has German ancestry and descends from generations of hunt-loving dogs, e.g. Eisenstein. Leda requires no stripping.

Trials

Leda has passed gun steadiness and spurlaut trials in Germany (DTK Delbrücker Land), and has passed the fox trial (cage). At a show in Germany, she received the grade ’sehr gut’, the second-best rating.

Characteristics

Leda is a wonderfully happy dog, who always meets the world with a wagging tail. She seeks contact, learns quickly, is easy to handle, and is probably the most obedient of our three dogs😊.

She often flushes pheasants out of the garden but otherwise prefers to stay close to us. Leda has an amazing nose, and can smell a frozen vacuum-packed steak from far away.

In hunting, Leda is used as an all-round dog with the primary focus on fox den hunting. She marks well at dens and only goes down when there is something to pursue. She works consistently and cleverly and switches tasks well. Leda is used alone in artificial dens but has a few times, on her own initiative, also entered natural dens.

Leda loves water and retrieving. She is therefore also the most used for retrieving ducks and crows. Regarding game birds, Bo has also used Leda, with great pleasure, to find pheasants.

Bo also sometimes takes her along in his hunting tower when scouting for bucks.

Tracking and tracking training: Leda could have earned much more documented merit here if Bo had had the time and prioritized it.
She did a flawless 40-hour track at only 5 months old, the very first time she tried. Leda is used to track shot game and has also found a few shot bucks.

On driven hunts, Leda was a bit of a late starter, driving 15–20 minutes during her first season and often staying close to Bo while searching. In her second season, she shows more independence and has added 10–15 minutes to her drive time. She always participates, always finds tracks, and produces game.

We got Hera from Austria, Kennel Kobeddus. Through Kennel Gravmand, we came in contact with Caroline Geerts, and after a couple of years we had the opportunity to buy a female from her kennel. Hera has good hunting lineage from Germany and Austria, and we are very happy to be able to bring her into breeding in Denmark. Hera needs light stripping about once a year.

Trials

Hera has passed gun steadiness and spurlaut trials in Germany (DTK Delbrücker Land). She was ’day’s winner’ (tagessieger) at the spurlaut trial in Germany, at only 13 months old. She has also passed the fox trial (cage) in Germany.

Characteristics

Hera is our youngest dog, which we brought from Austria. She is quick, happy, curious, and very much her own personality. She is quite contact-seeking, but also likes to lie out on the terrace keeping an eye on the world, together with Zeus. Hera jumps a lot, including right into people’s faces, since she assumes one must bend down to such a small dog…

In terms of hunting, Hera is still in training. She looks very promising as an all-round dog and has already successfully found a few shot bucks. She drives well and independently for about 30–40 minutes. She will become a regular hunting companion from next season, where she will also be used for den hunting.
