About Us
Hello 🌟
Behind Kennel Daxgården we are, Merete and Bo.
We live in Kragelund outside Silkeborg on a former farm property.
Our land is leased to an organic dairy producer, and in collaboration with him we work with biodiversity on our land. We are in the process of establishing living hedges around our two fields, both to attract insects and birds, and to provide peace for the wildlife.
From our windows we can watch hares, foxes and deer when they search for food in the fields. We have a fruit orchard with approx. 50 newly planted fruit trees, and have about 300 new small apple trees on the way. We have just been granted permission to establish 2-3 small ponds on our land, and we dream that this will attract both game birds and frogs and amphibians.
We have three wire-haired dachshunds, which we spend a lot of time with in everyday life, with coziness, training and hunting (Bo). We have both had dogs most of our lives, and could not imagine a daily life without a dog.
Merete grew up with wire-haired dachshunds – in fact her parents bought a wire-haired dachshund 3 days after she was born, and it guarded the pram when she took her afternoon nap outside on the terrace.
Bo has had several different hunting dogs throughout his life, both Small Münsterländer and Old Danish Pointing Dog, and now hunting with dachshunds is the focus. Bo mainly hunts in Denmark but also enjoys Swedish buck hunting in August and often shoots a buck in May on our own land. Bo is an avid hunter and dog man, and is out hunting with the dogs at least 15-20 times during the season. The dogs are always along, and often it’s really them who are invited first 😊.
It can be the following types of hunting:
- Drive hunts on large areas in dune plantations as well as on estates after cloven-hoofed game
- Hunts on slightly smaller beats and areas after birds, hares and roe deer
- Flight hunting for ducks and crows
- Fox and raccoon dog den hunting
- Tracking
Drive hunting with dachshunds makes good sense, since dachshunds don’t run too fast, and therefore don’t stress the game. The game can run fairly calmly in front of the dogs, and in this way is driven forward to the hunters at a pace that makes it easier for the hunters to get a good shot.
Merete is responsible for the daily feeding and care of the dogs, and she is also the one who takes care of them, cuddles them, and has a specific blanket in one of the sofas, where they are allowed to lie – even though we “of course don’t have dogs in the furniture” 😊.
Merete is also learning to strip the coat of one of our dogs that is not hand-stripping free (read more under Our dogs).
We almost always take the dogs with us on trips and vacations, and they are an integral part of our everyday life.
Merete has taken DKK’s breeder education and we of course follow DKK’s rules for breeding dachshunds. Merete has also registered a kennel name, so that our dogs are registered in the DKK studbook. Bo, on the other hand, studies pedigrees and keeps track of hunting lines, good partners for our dogs and which tests make sense to carry out on the dogs.
We train the dogs together, both at home and within DGK.
In addition, we each pursue our jobs as head of water in Silkeborg (Bo) and head of nutrition at Agriculture & Food (Merete).
